Your questions answered

Q. What qualifications and experience do I need to join the Register?

A. Details can be found on the join the register page of this web site.

Q. I am currently working abroad but on the CAMIP Register. Can I be State Registered?

A. Yes, but you will need to show proof of an approved CPD programme and pay the annual state registration fee.

Q. I am a freelance medical photographer currently registered with CAMIP. Am I eligible for State registration?

A. HPC say yes, but you must meet approved CPD requirements.

Q. When will State Registration for clinical photographers become mandatory?

A. This is currently undecided. However, communications with both the Department of Health and the Health Professions Council suggest that although this is now unlikely to happen before 2009, things are definitely moving forward.

Application to the CAMIP Voluntary Register is still highly desirable as this will guarantee your acceptance on the State Register without having to go through either the cost or the stress of the grandparenting process.

Q. Must I apply directly to the HPC for State Registration?

A. No, apply first for CAMIP Voluntary registration as all those accepted by that register will automatically be State Registered PLUS it is by far the less expensive route! (If you wait and apply direct to the State Register you will have to pay the assessment fee of £200).

Q. I am a former OIA member currently CAMIP registered.  I undertake general clinical photography as well as ophthalmic work.  Will I need to be State registered?

A. Yes.  CAMIP will continue your voluntary registration on payment of the £50 annual fee. If however, you are a qualified member of either IMI or BIPP, they will pay this fee for you. If you are a member of neither, it may well be worth considering applying for membership of one of these professional bodies in order to obtain the benefits they offer.

Q. If my application for CAMIP Voluntary Registration is unsuccessful, what other options do I have?

A. You will be able to apply directly for State Registration via the HPC grandparenting route when this is introduced.

Q. How much will it cost to apply for State Registration by the HPC grandparenting route?

A. The current fee for assessment is £200.

Q. Once State Registration is in place, what will the annual subscription be?

A The current fee is £60 per year.

Q. Will my professional body pay this fee?

A. No. Unfortunately neither will your employer: it is a legal requirement that practitioners maintain their own state registration.
